Plants That Support Us

LUNG & SINUS SUPPORT

If you live in the west, you’ve been likely living with unhealthy air from the fires this past month and likely every summer at some point. Breathing in this air can cause lung damage and asthma as well as compromise already weak lungs and immune systems. However, there are many ways you can protect your lungs and soothe your respiratory system during this time.  This applies for both poor air quality, the flu, common cold, and Covid-19. Even though there is no cure or vaccine for Covid-19, we can use plants to protect ourselves from all infection and viruses by keeping our immune system in good shape and improving our overall respiratory health.

Featured respiratory support plant:

Goldenrod

Goldenrod is a rich source of bioflavonoids. It tones respiratory mucous membranes, while thinning secretions and lessening the sensitivity of the airways. It is very well know to help with seasonal hayfever and allergies and has been used for acute stages of bronchitis. “It is employed in chronic or acute bronchitis in which there is excessive mucus in the upper portion of the lungs and respiratory system.  It is particularly indicated in cases in which blood may be coming up from the lungs during expectoration due to hemorrhage or ulcers in the lungs.  The astringent qualities of this herb allow it to have a tonic quality on the mucous membranes for both the respiratory system and the urinary system.”

Its antiseptic and antimicrobial properties make this a good choice for sore throats. It is a diuretic, and also great for kidney issues as well. Goldenrod is a premier decongestant, effectively alleviating upper respiratory congestion stemming from allergies, sinusitis, flu, or the common cold. It can be taken as a tea, syrup, or tincture for this purpose. In my experience, it is one of the strongest herbs for drying the sinuses. To relieve sinus pain and congestion take it as a tea or tincture.”

Tincture Dosage:  2-4ml (12-20 drops) take three times daily (1:5) or from ½ to 1 tsp. 3-4 times a day. Add to a glass of water and drink throughout day.
I made a small amount of this tincture from a backpacking trip this summer. If you want to purchase a 1oz supply. Email me!

Precautions:
Safety in pregnancy is unknown.  Because it is a strong diuretic, patients with impaired kidneys or liver should be carefully monitored.  Caution in people with allergies to Asteraceae family.
